The death toll from the opening of the spillways of the Bagre Dam now stands at 17, according to the National Disaster Management Organization, NADMO.
NADMO had previously recorded nine deaths in the Upper East and Northern Regions.
But this has increased to seventeen as torrential rains and flood waters from the dam submerge more communities.
Public Relations Officer of NADMO, Maj. Nicholas Mensah told Joy News the deaths were as a result of failure by the victims to heed the advise of his outfit and other institutions to relocate from the area.
According to him, some of the residents risk their lives to harvest their crops submerged by the floods leading to the deaths. They attempt to do so by canoes, some of which capsized.
