Former Greater Accra Regional Commander of Police DCOP (Retd) Douglas Akrofi Asiedu has asked Ghanaians to support the Community Policing concept as it is the surest way of giving protection in their own communities. He said community policing has come to change the face of policing in the country, with the involvement of the community, where the policeman would no longer be feared. He noted that the country has diverse security needs which the police could not handle alone hence the need to help the community policing concept to succeed. DCOP (Retd) Akrofi Asiedu made this appeal in an interview on Adom Dwaso Nsem with Adakabre Frimpong Manso on Monday. He was speaking on the topic “training incapacity of police, challenges and the way forward”. He said criminals were now more daring and that without the support of the communities, the police would find it difficult to handle them, and urged chiefs and opinion leaders to welcome the concept. The former Regional Police Boss said though police were enjoying some level of public cooperation and collaboration, that relationship could be further enhanced through the building of friendship and brotherliness between the two segments of the society. He therefore charged individuals to volunteer "quality" information to the police to make them very effective. Community Policing is an emerging concept in policing which seeks to bridge the communication and interaction gap between the police service and the communities that they serve. It aims at encouraging the establishment of a close relationship with civil societies in order to give the police an opportunity to understand and appreciate the security needs and concerns of the various societies in which they operate. This method of policing leads to a situation where the police can work in partnership with local people to identify potential problems and take proactive steps in responding to them. The Community Policing Unit of the Ghana Police Service was established in June 2002 with the setting up of the administration section and the Bicycle Patrol Unit.
