Gender activists are calling for adequate provisions and safeguards in the country’s constitution to fast track the agenda for women empowerment. They want the constitution review commission to ensure this as it works to refine the country’s most treasured legal document. At a roundtable discussion organised by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) Thursday, the gender activists complained that the constitution does not provide details on women issues. The women cited Article 27 saying it narrows their functions by referring only reproduction. They are therefore asking for specific gender clauses that will incorporate the economic, cultural and administrative roles of women.
Chris Dadzie, a gender advocate and member of the IEA constitution review coalition believes some aspects of the constitution should be restated with specific emphasis on the gender and discrimination aspects to reflect international best practices. She said this is an opportunity for gender imbalances to be streamlined to ensure that women’s role at home and elsewhere are recognized.Source: Joy News/Ghana
