Level 300 student of the Radford University College, Moses Jackson Bourne, has been crowned overall winner of the 2017 edition of the Graphic Design Awards Ghana at a ceremony in Accra.

He beat 61 other participants to win the ultimate prize of GHÈ»700.00 and a one-month internship programme at Insight Grey in South Africa.

Radford University also dominated the awards by claiming four other category awards out of a total of eight.

In all, eight categories were set and each had three nominees with each winner receiving GHȻ700.00 while third and second winners were presented with certificates.

The short-listed participants were given topics on which to present design ideas in a way that will impact or communicate effectively to serve its purpose within the visual communication industry.

The topics included Social Media campaign, Public Service Announcement, Web Design, Infographics, Magazine Design, Packaging /Brand Design and integrated-Cross Platform.

Participants were made to design their artworks that fall in line with the topics.

They used some of the country's symbols of their choice to design a logo with the task they were given.

Founder of the Awards, Felix Ofori Dartey, said the project was launched in 2014 to promote and celebrate professionals in the graphic design industry, however, exactly a year later, some graphic design students expressed interest.

Felix said he admitted students because “in the long run, it is these same students that would end up as professionals.”

He said he will later realise that the professionals themselves were too busy to participate in the award, indicating that the decision to include students was a good one.

Head of Graphic Design Department at Radford University College, Farah Hamooi, said the students swept most of the awards because of hard work.

“Since day one, I followed these students up and made sure they worked hard,” she said.

"We the lecturers followed up on them too, to check on how far they had made progress and gave them comments, pushed them, helped them,” she adds.

One of the winners of the awards, Jacob Asare, said his success came about because he trusted God to see him through.

"I would like to take this to the highest level," he said.

He thanked the lecturers of Raford University for the support they provided.
