Black Bombers head coach Ofori Asare has blamed inadequate logistical support for Ghana’s disappointing boxing campaign at the just-ended Commonwealth Games, revealing that some boxers were forced to share competition equipment.

Ghana returned from the Games with only one boxing medal, a bronze, after a difficult campaign.

Speaking to JoySports, Asare said the team faced several challenges before and during the competition, including a shortage of essential equipment such as boxing gloves, shorts and boots.

He said the situation affected preparations and created additional pressure for the athletes.

“We had our own challenges. Some of the boxers had to share boxing boots, gloves, and shorts, among other equipment, which was very stressful and unhygienic. As a coach, I had to ask the boxers to share because that was the only way we could move forward.”

According to Asare, the team had expected the necessary equipment to be provided by the authorities but those assurances were not fulfilled.

“We were expecting them (authorities) to provide us with the necessary equipment because that was what we had been told. The Ghana team could have been disqualified because of the [documentation] issues.”

Ghana won a bronze medal in boxing at the Games in Glasgow.
