A delegation of chiefs from the Volta Region Friday stormed the CID headquarters in Accra to “express good will” to businessman, Alfred Agbesi Woyome, and appealed to President John Evans Atta Mills to pardon him.Alfred Woyome has been on remand after his arrest a week ago for his role in the controversial GH¢51 judgment debt. His appeal for bail was denied when he appeared before an Accra Court on Monday.The about 15 chiefs from the southern part of Volta told Joy News’ Eric Ahianyo that their “illustrious child” has not been treated fairly by the ruling party of which he is a staunch member.As “disappointed” and “embarrassed” as they were about government’s handling of Woyome’s scandal, the chiefs are seeking some reliefs from the government, which they outlined in a petition to be presented to the President.They said since it is within the powers of the President to grant pardon to prisoners, in spite of the fact that the chiefs are on the known that the case is before a competent court of law, President Mills was being asked to exercise his powers and pardon him on the basis that he has “played a great role in the running of the affairs of this country”.The Chiefs also maintained that Mr Woyome prior to his arrest never showed signs of absconding and were certain he will not run away when granted bail.They were openly appalled by the treatment meted out to Mr Woyome since he is a known member of the National Democratic Congress, and should not have been treated as such – arresting him in the streets and putting him behind bars.“[In] matters of this nature, they should have called him and then questioned him behind their chambers, and find out from him whether he has really committed such an offence,” Togbui Ahli II, Avadado of Fieve Traditional Area and the leader of the delegation told Joy News.Inasmuch as he called for a fair trial for Woyome, he condemned the media for peddling untruth about Mr Woyome, which he said has misled the public into interpreting the EOCO report which indicted him in whatever way it suited them - usually in a negative manner.Nevertheless, the chiefs were granted access to Mr Woyome. Togbui Ahli II confirmed: “He told us he is in good health…to us he is in good mood…we are happy … he doesn’t look depressed.”Mr Alfred Agbesi Woyome has been charged with conspiracy to commit crime, defrauding by false pretense and corrupting public officials.Some of the chiefs at the Police CID Headquarters were: Togbui Ahadzi Dodo, Chief Kingmaker of Agare Traditional Area; Togbui Peniklo-Adelah of Adutoh; Togbui Abudada IV of Adaklu; Mama Adenya, Queenmother of Lavi-Agare Traditional area; and Togbui Aheto Kpeglah Hlortatoh of Fieve Traditional Area.
