1. EOCO allegedly clears embattled dep. EC in 'missing' GHS480k saga
Embattled Deputy Electoral Commissioner Georgina Opoku Amankwah and two other officers accused of siphoning the sum of ¢480,177.87 from the Commission’s Endowment Fund have been reportedly cleared of any wrongdoing. The conclusion was reached by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after seven months of investigations, Myjoyonline.com has learnt. The two others are EC Chief Accountant, Kwaku Owusu Agyei-Larbi and Finance Officer Joseph Kwaku Asamoah.
2. Majority supports Minority for Dr Bawumia's health situation to be disclosed
The Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensa Bonsu has backed calls by the Minority in Parliament for a full disclosure on the health status of the Vice President. He said the Minority Leader’s calls are legitimate but their request will be granted after doctors in the United Kingdom given the right diagnosis of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. Mr Mensah Bonsu was reacting to members of the Minority National Democratic Congress (NDC) in parliament who are calling for a full disclosure of the ailment that has forced Dr Bawumia to seek medical leave in the UK.
Two of the ten personalities accused of registering and offering to manage the $217million uncompleted University of Ghana Medical Centre in their names have described the claim as mischievous. Ex-UG Vice-Chancellor Professor Ernest Aryeetey and former Deputy Health Minister Robert Joseph Mettle Nunoo have both said the Health Minister and his Deputy are uninformed about the controversy surrounding the facility. Prof Aryeetey told Joy FM’s Emefa Apawu Tuesday, the University of Ghana Board duly sanctioned the establishment of a private entity to take over the management of the facility.
4. 14-year-old alleged defiled by 4 men
A 14-year-old girl is reported to have been defiled by four men in the Ellembele District of the Western region. The victim, a class six pupil of Asenda Basic School, was allegedly defiled after the men spiked her drink during a social event in the town over the weekend. She woke up the next morning with severe body pains and bloodied pants.
5. Aviation Minister orders demolishing of buildings on GCAA land
Aviation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah has said all residential and commercial buildings situated on Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, GCAA, lands at East Legon will be demolished. According to her, some sensitive aviation gadgets positioned in the area cannot function effectively because of the encroachment. “We can’t sacrifice the safety of our airspace for the interests of individuals. All buildings cited along the red lines of the encroached area will have to be pulled down,” she said.
6. Smuggled vintage vehicles owner blames clearing agent
Myjoyonline.com can confirm that the two vintage Mercedes Benz cars said to cost $3.2 million and smuggled into the country, belongs to a prominent Accra-based businessman. The businessman, name withheld, for now, bought the cars from Stuttgart in Germany, it has emerged. The businessman is claiming an agent contracted to ship the vehicles to Ghana, rather smuggled them into the country through an unapproved route at Ghana’s southern town of Aflao in the Volta Region without the required customs documents.
7. Prof Aryeetey, others accused of registering UG Medical Centre
Former Deputy Health Minister, Rojo Mettle Nunoo, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey and one Prof. Aaron Nii Lante Lawson have been accused of registering the newly built 650-bed University of Ghana Health Facility in their names. According to a Deputy Minister of Health, Kingsley Aboagye-Gyedu, checks from the Registrar General's Department indicates that the centre has been registered in the names of these three individuals under the name “University of Ghana Medical Centre”. “It will shock Ghanaians to hear that a limited liability company such as the facility has been registered in the names of Rojo Mettle Nunoo, Prof. Ernest Ayittey and one Prof. Aaron Nii Lante Lawson in their respective names” he alleged.
8. Police will use reasonable force to handle criminal groups
The Interior Minister has said the police administration will use reasonable force to confront and apprehend criminals terrorising Ghanaians. This was after Ambrose Dery held a closed-door meeting with members of the Defence and Interior committees of Parliament on steps being taken to protect the citizenry. Mr Dery, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante and the top brass of the police administration were in parliament to brief the House on circumstances that led to a jailbreak at the Kwabenya police station.
