The District Chief Executive for Nadowli, Abu Kabienbata Kansangabata has expressed worry about the attempt to turn the Sankana dam into a swimming pool.
Mr. Kansangabata stated that the dam is designed only for agricultural activities and nothing else, cautioning people to desist from the practice or face the law.
The DCE made the statement at a press conference organized by the Nadowli district assembly in Nadowli to highlight achievements of the assembly.
‘‘In recent times I have received disturbing reports about deliberate attempt to turn the Sankana dam in to a swimming pool including students of the Wa campus of the University for Development Studies.
My check at the Ghana Tourist Board and the chiefs and people of the community reveals that nobody has sanctioned the practice’’, he added.
During weekends and holidays, lots of people especially the youth from the region travel to the dam to spend time with their loved ones. Due to that it is becoming popular and it has even been christened ‘’Sanka Beach’’.
The Nadowli DCE admitted that many people will not be happy about the decision but they have to hold the bull by the horns to ensure that things are done properly in order for the assembly, the chiefs and the people to benefit.
He announced that the assembly is in talks with some development partners especially the telecommunication companies to construct a swimming pool around the area instead for their use which will also generate revenue for the assembly.
On the rural electrification project, Mr. Kansangabata stated that the district has seen unprecedented mass connection of 57 communities to the national grid. He said the government is determined to extend power to rural communities to create an enabling environment for light industrial and rural enterprise development.
The Nadowli DCE said under the retargeting and expansion program of the Ghana school feeding program, the district has benefitted and 21 schools more schools have been added to the seven already existing ones. It is their hope that a total of 7,454 pupils will be fed with hot and nutritious meal during school days.
In the same breath, he stated the district has received a total of 7,874 uniforms from government which have been distributed to schools in the district, adding that priority was given to the poorest of the poor in the distribution.
Mr. Kansangabata announced that a total of six million, three thousand, seven hundred and seven Ghana cedis, eighty five pesewas (GHC6003, 77. 85) was spent on development projects; the sources of the funding included DACF, DWAP, IGF, JICA and the two Members of Parliament.
