The National Enforcement Body for the 2012 political parties Code of Conduct has threatened sanctions against political parties who do not desist from perpetrating violence in the ongoing voter registration exercise. So far, fingers are being pointed at the two big political parties, the ruling National Democratic Congress and the opposition New Patriotic Party. This was part of resolutions arrived at after closed-door discussions between the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), the National Enforcement Body and representatives of the various political parties, religious bodies and other stakeholders in Accra. The Political parties represented included the PPP, CPP, NDC and NPP. Representatives from the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Journalist Association, Brigadier-General Francis K. Agyemfra, a visiting Senior Fellow at IEA and Justice Emil Short, former CHRAJ Commissioner also attended the meeting. Most Rev. Professor Emmanuel Asante, Chairman of the National Peace Council told the media all political parties including the NDC and the NPP agreed to demonstrate commitment to the enforcement and implementation of the code by educating their members and supporters. He noted the parties also agreed to disown those who breach any of the provisions in the 2012 Political Parties Code of Conduct. He also expressed worry about how the credibility of the security agencies has been questioned when they are supposed to gain public trust in enforcing law and order. Asked why the NDC and NPP have not yet been sanctioned, Most. Rev. Professor Emmanuel Asante said they have already issued a warning which will be followed by sanctions if they don’t desist from perpetuating violence.
