National number one seed, Henry Adjei-Darko has set a target of getting Ghana to the prestigious Zone Two of the Davis Cup. Adjei Darko, one time 275th in the world recently returned home from his Atlanta base to start a foundation for tennis development and is already looking ahead to Ghana’s Davis Cup campaign in July. Ghana played in Zone One in 1990 and dropped to Zone Two the next year. Ghana now plays in Zone Three after dropping from the prestigious Zone Two over five years ago. The senior national team’s international performances over the last three years have not been the best. Adjei-Darko told Joy Sports the Golden Rackets team can only advance in the Davis Cup if managers of the sport locally invest in the team’s preparations. “We can get back to group two but we need support. We have to be camped for at least a month so we can train continuously and get back in form for the Davis Cup,” the 29-year-old told Joy Sports. He suggested the US-based trio of Salifu Mohammed, Emmanuel Mensah and Owusu Menford and UK-based Gunther Darkey are the key players who can make this revival. “Sailfu is in Maryland right now and Emmanuel Mensah is in LA and I and I am trying to get those guys to come where I am in Altanta so we can train together. But these guys have bills to pay so once some provision can be made for them to earn something they will be free to train,” Adjei-Darko told Joy Sports. According to him once the team gets the sustained training together at one location the Golden Rackets can go to the Davis Cup in Tunisia and qualify to Europe/Africa Zone Two. Adjei-Darko is looking forward to launching his Henry Adjei-Darko (HAD) Foundation to introduce young talented players to the sport and help them with equipment to explore their talents. “I have seen an amazingly high number of youthful talents who need the support. And I am not looking forward to coming home every year to just donate equipment and leave. I want to make this permanent so we can have a sustained plan to help these young ones to come up,” he added.
