The University of Development Studies (UDS) Wa campus has embarked on a crash helmet campaign to raise awareness on the adverse effect of not wearing the protective gear.

This follows the revelation that most student deaths are linked to motorbike accidents.

In 2017, 99 motor accidents were recorded in the Wa municipality alone.

Authorities of UDS Wa campus told Joy News that they have lost count of students who died because of motorbike accidents.

“Most of these deaths could have been prevented if they were wearing crash helmets,” authorities say.

Assistant Registrar of the university, Mueen Abdulai says they have introduced a new policy that prevents cyclists from entering the premises if they are not wearing crash helmets.

“We are also brainstorming on ways to make sure that this task that we have set for ourselves is achieved,” he said.

The President of the Students Representative Council (SRC) UDS, Mohammed Jarah Wa expressed worry at the rate students lose their lives to motorbike accidents.

“The Regional Hospital has recorded a lot of motorbike accidents over the years and most of them happen to be students of UDS and we lost most of them. Some had fractures in the head and the doctors have complained bitterly to us,” he said.
