A 50-year-old car dealer has been shot dead, while his wife is in critical condition after unidentified gunmen attacked the couple outside their home at Beach Drive Estate near Tuba in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
The deceased, Kwesi Rahman, was reportedly returning home with his wife from an evening walk when the incident occurred at about 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 6.
According to eyewitnesses, the couple had just arrived at the entrance to their residence when an unidentified assailant emerged and opened fire on them.
Mr. Rahman sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died instantly at the scene, while his wife was also shot several times.
Residents who heard the gunfire rushed to the scene and assisted in transporting the injured woman to a nearby hospital, where she is receiving treatment. For security and medical reasons, the facility where she is being treated has not been disclosed.
Speaking to Adom News, an eyewitness, Faustina Antwi, said the body of the deceased had been conveyed to the police morgue for preservation and autopsy.
A resident who witnessed the aftermath of the attack said the sound of gunfire sent residents rushing from their homes.
“I was outside around 9:50 when I heard what sounded like a gunshot. So I quickly went inside and told my mum that I had heard gunshots. When we came out, we saw people coming from down there. When I got there, I saw him lying in front of his gate. I didn’t see anybody and I didn’t hear any noise. It was just the gunshot I heard,” the resident recounted.
The incident has left residents of Beach Drive Estate shaken, with many expressing concern over security in the community.
Some residents have called on the Ghana Police Service to intensify security patrols within the estate to protect lives and property and restore confidence among residents.
A relative of the deceased also appealed to the police to conduct a thorough investigation to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
Police have since launched investigations into the shooting and are working to identify and arrest the gunman behind the attack.
Mr. Rahman, who celebrated his 50th birthday in July this year, was well known in the community as a car dealer. Authorities are yet to establish the motive behind the attack.
