The Majority Leader, Cletus Avoka says his colleagues in the Minority have no excuse not to return to the House to pass the CI 73, which will create an additional 45 constituencies. Mr Avoka said the upcoming exhibition of the Voters Register should not stop the MPs from carrying out their duties in the House. His comments come shortly after the Speaker of Parliament Joyce Bamford-Addo officially summoned MPs to return to the House from the 3rd to the 28th of September, to allow the Constitutional Instrument creating 45 new constituencies to mature. The Minority who are opposed to the formation of the new constituencies hinted they will be unable to return to pass the law, if the return date coincides with date for the exhibition of the voters' register by the Electoral Commission. Minority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu told Joy News that by the regulations of the Electoral Commission, MPs are required to be in their constituencies during the exhibition of the voters' register. “We cannot be at the two places at the same time, in particular those of us in the Northern sector of the country or even the Western and Central regions of the country. “You cannot be commuting on daily basis if you are from the Western Region for instance,” he said. In a reaction, the Majority Leader said the excuse by his colleagues was untenable. He said it was possible for the MPs to combine the two national activities effectively, adding there are party agents who are mandated to monitor activities during the exhibition exercise. He said the MPs could supervise the exhibition exercise in the various constituencies for about two days and then return to Parliament. "An MP does not need to be home for ten days to watch or monitor the exhibition,” he said. He said the excuse by the Minority was raised on the floor of Parliament and was dismissed, adding, he was surprised anybody would still be advancing that argument.
