The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has demanded that President John Mahama must tell Ghanaians how much it cost the taxpayer when he went on his nationwide “Thank You Tours”.
The PPP contends that even though the tours were a continuation of the national mourning activities for late President John Mills, President Mahama consistently made partisan political statements every step of the way.
According to a statement issued by the PPP, during the tours, “Monies were spent on telephone calls, fuel, food, per diem, gifts, transportation (including by plane) at the expense of taxpayer” which must be accounted for.
The PPP argued that President Mahama’s actions amounted to abuse of incumbency which does not create a platform for free and fair elections.
But presidential spokesperson, John Jinapor has dismissed the calls describing them as misplaced. In an interview with Joy News, John Jinapor described PPP’s request as a “storm in a tea cup”.
According to him, the nationwide tours were just like any other national assignment the president undertakes. The presidential spokesperson stated that funds for the nationwide tours came from the presidency which is subject to audit by the Auditor General.
