The Public Relations Officer of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana has apologised to the leadership of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) for making unsavory remarks about General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia. Emmanuel Osei Akyeampong said the Church had no interest in engaging in a war of words with officials of the NDC neither did it want to mar the good working relationship it had with the ruling party. The PRO of the Church likened the NDC scribe to a drunk after Mr. Asiedu Nketia accused the Presbyterian Church of singing to the tune of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). General Mosquito was reacting to a call by the Moderator of the Church, Rt. Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey on the Electoral Commission (EC) to suspend the proposed creation of 45 additional constituencies. General Mosquito accused the Moderator of the Presby Church Moderator of leading the crusade to stampede the EC to succumb to the whims and caprices of the NPP - comments that infuriated Mr Akyeampong who said the NDC General Secretary was talking like a drunk. But on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, the Presby PRO expressed remorse about his comments and apologized to the NDC. According to him, the peace of Ghana was paramount to the Church and that nothing will be done to undermine it. Mr. Osei Akyeampong observed that as the country prepares for a crucial election in three months, the onus lies on every Ghanaian to ensure peace before, during and after the December election, emphasising the Presby Church will play its role in that regard. He assured Ghanaians of the Church’s neutrality and its commitment to helping build Ghana’s democracy. Mr. Osei Akyeampong urged General Mosquito to emulate his example and apologize to the leadership of the Presby Church. General Mosquito however maintains his comments were justified, insisting he was only giving friendly advice to the Church to desist from taking one-sided political stance on national issues. He said the Church’s interference in political issues is a recipe for disaster since according to him, its communiqué was in support of the NPP. General Mosquito stated emphatically that there was nothing wrong with his statement to warrant the apology Mr. Akyeampong was looking for.
