The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority has replaced the Instrument Landing System, ILS at the Kotoka International Airport at an estimated cost of one million dollars.
Also known as the localizer in the aviation industry, the system supports aircrafts in their landing effort.
It was destroyed when an Allied Cargo Aircraft overshot the runway in June this year.
Speaking to Joy Business at Runway Safety Workshop in Accra, Director General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, Air Commodore Kwame Mamphey said although another device was in use the replacement was necessitated by the need for more efficiency.
“It’s a system that gives vertical and horizontal guidance to the aircraft and enables the aircraft to come down to various altitudes. In n the absence of the ILS, we had the VOR but the former adopts a precision approach compared with the latter which is a non precision approach. So its better to have an ILS” he noted.
