A leading member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has fired a salvo at the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie for linking the ruling party to the cannabis seized at Heathrow Airport in London.Kakra Essamuah cast a slur on the credibility Sir John describing him as “a rumour monger and a liar”.Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie on "Kukurantumi" programme Saturday alleged that the owner of that cannabis is an NDC man adding that the NPP will soon release detailed information to back the claim. However, on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Kakra Essamuah said the comment by the NPP scribe is “irresponsible” and should not have come from a guru of a party which may govern the country in the unlikely event the NPP wins the election. He debunked the claim stating that it is part of the NPP ploy to dent the image of the NDC to juxtapose the fact that some people in their [NPP] party deal in narcotics. The NDC man underscored the need for drug issues to be depoliticized and rather as a nation find a lasting solution to the canker.Kakra Essamuah assured Ghanaians of government's commitment to fighting the drug menace so that the country will be free from cocaine and cannabis. On his part, a Deputy Director of Communication of the NPP, Yaw Boaben Asamoah, a discussant on the programme, said the members of the NDC must bow down their heads in shame for politicizing the drug issue and made political capital out of it in 2008.He indicated that the seizure of the cannabis outside the country has marred the image of the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) therefore its boss Akrasi Sarpong must resign to save himself from the humiliations. The NPP Deputy Director of Communication alleged that the arrests being made abroad are indications that government was suppressing information from the general public to paint a picture that the NDC has been able to halt the narcotic trade.Boaben Asamoah said the NDC is reaping the bad seed it sowed against the NPP in 2008.
