The Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Rashid Tanko -Computer, has stated that a peaceful election requires a properly executed process.
According to him, the Peace Council, as an advocate for peace, should be concerned with the procedures that ensure peace.
On Monday, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) met with civil society groups, labour unions, and religious leaders at the KAMA Conference Centre in Accra to discuss concerns about Ghana's provisional voters' register for the 2024 elections. The Peace Council was however, absent at the meeting.
Speaking on JoyNews AM Show, Dr Tanko-Computer said, “If the process is not right, do not forget you are not going to have any peaceful election on the D-Day. So, this is why we are interested in the process, and we think that as a body that is always talking about peace, they should also be interested in the process that leads to the peace. And so, if the Electoral Commission would sit in their office and tell the whole world that they cannot rig an election, an Electoral Commission cannot rig an election, but their posturing, their attitude, is pointing towards that kind of rigging machinery.”
Dr Tanko-Computer stated that the meeting was successful, with the objective of ensuring that civil society organisations (CSOs), diplomats, religious leaders, and media outlets understood the NDC's in-depth analysis of the voters' register and the discrepancies they uncovered.
He explained the process used to identify these discrepancies, which was well-received by the attendees.
Dr Tanko-Computer added that it was acknowledged that the NDC had a valid point.
"You could see some of them were indicating that, well, maybe the Electoral Commission fears the word 'forensic audit.' If we can substitute the word 'forensic' and all that. Clearly, if they had not understood us, they would not have gone this path."
