Government's spokesperson on Infrastructure says the Accra-Tema motorway does not require a huge financial investment in repairing it.

According to Kojo Frempong, government spending so much in fixing the potholes and cracks on that stretch is not needed, if $570 million has been budgeted for in the complete overhauling of that stretch.

He disclosed on Joy FM's Super Morning Show, Thursday, that the Roads Ministry is investing $570 million into the reconstruction of the Accra-Tema motorway.

"There’s going to be an interchange at Teshie Link. There’s going to be an interchange at Abattoir. There’s going to be a new interchange at Fiesta Royale Hotel.

"The Neoplan junction is going to have an interchange. There are going to be 14 pedestrian footbridges on this motorway. And then streetlights and toll plaza."

In opting for a cost-effective option, Mr Frempong revealed that the Ministry is using bitumen instead of the required option, concrete.

"The reason we’re doing bitumen on concrete is that, if we’re going to undertake such a major overhaul in December, you don’t go through the process of very costly repair on the motorway using concrete."

Today's discussion on the Super Morning Show was a continuing discussion on issues regarding the Accra-Tema Motorway. Some of the issues from fervent listeners of the show shared were; the poor state of the road which has resulted in a series of accidents, and the purpose of paying road tolls to the government if the potholes and cracks on the road have not been repaired.

Addressing these concerns, he said that using bitumen is not only a cost-cutting measure, but it is also a temporary measure to resolve the issues faced by the ordinary Ghanaian when plying on that stretch.

He reiterated the fact that government is doing all it can to ensure the safety of citizens when using the motorway.

"And I would plead with everybody who uses the motorway, don’t drive on it as if you are driving on the autobahn. It’s not 120km anyway. Come down to about 80km, 70km and just get on the motorway and get off it in one piece.

"I have lost friends on the motorway. I’ve lost workers on the motorway. People who tried to cross and didn’t look were knocked down," he said.
