The Ghana Drivers and Car Owners Association has implored the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to address concerns raised against the current license acquisition process before rolling out a new one.

The Association argues the Authority’s directive for drivers to go through a driving school before being issued with the license, needs to be reconsidered.

Public Relations Officer of the Association, Francis Appiah told Joy News’ Fiifi Koomson most of the driving schools do not have trailers and tankers for their training.

“We learn with salon cars [but] we are better at driving than some of the trainers,” he said.

The Authority is expected to introduce a vehicle documentation Smart Card to replace papers issued during car registration in November.

While it welcomed the initiative, the drivers said the DVLA should be prepared to cushion the cost of the new cards.

But Director, Driving Training, Testing and Licensing, at the DVLA, Cheyuo Wienaa Musah said the Authority has been exploring alternative ways of testing trailer and tanker drivers.

“This country is ruled by laws [and] there are processes for changing the law [but] I have explained to the groups that we are making alternative arrangement for people who have not gone to school,” he said.

He told Bernice Abu Baidoo on Joy FM’s Midday News Wednesday “this is a singular concern [and] it is not going to stop driving.”
