The race for leadership positions in the New Patriotic Patriotic Party ahead of its National Delegates’ Conference to elect new leaders, is gradually heightening, as incumbent General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie has declared his intentions to stand for re-election.
Mr. Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie also known as ‘Sir John’, has come under increasing pressure from some sections of the party, over his utterances in recent times.
Recent among the utterances is Mr. Afriyie’s claim that, ruling National Democr4atic Congress [NDC] masterminded the the near fatal accident of the party’s 2012 vice presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia last week, leaves much to be desired.
While no clear candidates have emerged, sources within the party say the current Communications Director, Nana Akomea may be eyeing the post.
However, ‘Sir John’ believes Nana Akomea “will suffer” before he can become the General Secretary of the party.
Mr Owusu Afriyie insists he bears the former Okaikwei South MP no grudge, but he believes the duties of a General Secretary may be too much for him.
But in a sharp response, Nana Akomea has rebutted speculation that he is interested in becoming the scribe of the NPP.
Speaking to Adom News the former Information Minister noted that he and the party are more interested in the ongoing legal challenge of the 2012 election results, than jostling for positions.
Nana Akomea said he had no plans to contest for any party position adding, he has held positions higher than the General Secretary, including being a cabinet Minister.
