Occupy Ghana says it’s disappointed in the resignation of Martin Amidu from the Office of the Special Prosecutor citing allegations of government interference in his investigations.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story, Wednesday, the Leader of Occupy Ghana said Martin Amidu’s decision to resign was akin to abandoning a fight instead of him standing his grounds and making sure that the independence of the Office of the Special Prosecutor was cemented.

He said, “We’re a bit disappointed that if Mr. Amidu really thought that the executive was encroaching on his independence, what he could have done as a patriot and what would have helped all of us going forward was for him to have stood his ground.”

According to Segbefia, other independent institutions and their heads in the country have stood their grounds against political encroachment thus it wasn’t farfetched for Martin Amidu to have done same.

He cited the case of the Auditor General Yao Domelevo who had taken the Executive to court on similar grounds.

“There are others and other institutions in this country who have stood their grounds especially like in the office of the Auditor General, stood their grounds, gone to court to assert their independence and the courts have granted same.”

He continued, “And so why run with your tail in between your legs when some other independent bodies who have also dealt with this encroachment have sooner walked over the executive than resign?”

According to Kweku Segbefia, Martin Amidu’s resignation could best be described as a loss of a unique opportunity to assert the independence of the Office of the Special Prosecutor.

“So here we believe we have lost a unique opportunity to have asserted the independence of the office of the special prosecutor, this would have served as a good precedence for all other office holders going forward,” he stated.
