Former Attorney General Martin Amidu has attributed John Mahama’s resounding electoral victory to Ghanaians’ rejection of alleged abuses of state power by the outgoing administration.
In an opinion article, he accused the ruling government of employing undue state influence in an attempt to derail a free and fair election, only to be rebuffed by a determined electorate.
Martin Amidu claimed the incumbent government, led by President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, manipulated state machinery to undermine the integrity of the election process.
“The determination of President Nana Akufo-Addo to use all the means of state power at his disposal…was self-evident even to the last hour of the vote,” he alleged.

Despite these challenges, the Ghanaian electorate delivered a decisive mandate to Mahama, avoiding the prospect of a runoff.
Martin Amidu praised this as a significant show of political awareness and resilience.
“The purposeful decision of the Ghanaian electorate not to create any situation for a run-off demonstrates their understanding of the dynamics of politics when faced with a government which has wantonly abused their trust,” he stated.
The former Special Prosecutor also emphasised that the election results reflected widespread dissatisfaction with the outgoing administration’s performance over nearly eight years.
Martin Amidu lauded voters for choosing to prioritize national interests over the incentives and rhetoric offered by the incumbent.
“The electorate’s decision was a demonstration of their determination to disabuse the minds of the political elite of the presumption that the ordinary Ghanaian lacks common sense to make decisions based on his national self-interest,” Amidu declared.
As Mahama prepares to lead Ghana again from January 7, Martin Amidu’s remarks serve as a reminder of the weighty expectations placed upon the incoming administration.
