Police at the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) at the Ministries in Accra say Asamoah Gyan could face up 25 years in prison if found guilty in the rape case brought against him.
The Unit is expected to begin investigations into the matter after a 22-year-old university student filed a case there.
Sarah Kwabla, is said to have first reported the case of the alleged rape to the Odorkor Police but it has emerged that lawyers for Asamoah Gyan had rather filed a case of attempted blackmail.
The Odorkor police closed that case after the two parties agreed to resolve the matter amicably.
However counsel for the student, Maurice Ampaw says he has filed a fresh case of rape at DOVVSU against the Black Stars captain.
National DOVSSU Head, ACP HabibaTwumasi Sarpong confirmed to Joy News they have received the complaint.
She says the plaintiff reported a case of rape and that is what is being investigated.
“If a rape case is true according to the code then the defendant will receive a sentence between 5 to 25 years in jail at the prerogative of the judge”.
She added that Asamoah Gyan has not been charged and that the only thing that is being done is investigations into the report.
