The Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhassan Suhuyini, has said the commissioning of the newly constructed bridge in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region represents far more than the unveiling of infrastructure.
He described the project as a symbol of restored safety, renewed hope, and the fulfilment of a long-standing government promise to the people.
The bridge, which spans the Offin River, replaces a dilapidated structure that had become a serious hazard to commuters, particularly farmers transporting produce from Kotokuom and surrounding communities to urban centres.
Years of pressure from heavy-duty trucks had left the old bridge in a dire state, with broken beams, large cracks, and weakened pillars.
Its worsening condition compelled the Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, to order its closure on 3 March 2025, a move that cut off vital access routes for several communities within the Atwima Mponua District.
The shutdown intensified calls for urgent action, as residents faced growing difficulties in moving goods and people.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Tuesday, August 26, Mr Suhuyini said: “We are not just here to commission a piece of infrastructure, but to celebrate the restoration of safety, the renewal of hope, and the fulfilment of a promise made to the good people of this noble and traditional region.”
