The Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso will be opened at 9:30 am Friday the Volta River Authority (VRA) of Ghana has confirmed."It is going to be a limited spillage" Belona Gerard of the VRA told Joy FM's Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah.Officials from VRA, the National Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Officials from the Ghana Embassy in Burkina Faso are in the control room in Burkina Faso to observe the monitor events, she added.An estimated 200,000 residents in the Northern and Upper Regions of Ghana will be affected by the spillage from the dam.Earlier there was conflicting information about the opening of the dam with the VRA expecting prior notice from their Burkinabe counterparts.According to Belona Gerard the notice finally came at 7:32 am Friday to confirm the spillage.Spillage from the Bagre Dam has in the past caused havoc to low lying areas in the Upper Regions of Ghana.Somehow, some residents who may be worst affected by the spillage have refused to relocate, despite several interventions by NADMO.Meanwhile, NADMO officials say they are well prepared to deal with the flood situation that may arise from the spillage.Major Nicholas Mensah, PRO for NADMO told Joy FM residents must not panic but to heed to the advice of NADMO.According to him, the District Assemblies within the various municipalities have made provisions for temporaral shelter for residents who will relocate.Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
