The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has extended the curfew in Bawku Municipality and its surrounding areas, following recommendations made by the Upper East Regional Security Council.
The renewed curfew, which comes into effect on Monday, March 3, 2025, will be from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., with the possibility of a review or further extension after one week.
The minister also reiterated the ban on carrying offensive weapons, firearms, or ammunition in the affected regions, emphasising that any individual found in violation of this directive will face arrest and prosecution.
Bawku has been under curfew since November 2021, due to ongoing chieftaincy disputes that have led to multiple fatalities.
Government calls on chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, the youth and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them as well as to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace.
