The vigilance of a taxi driver has led to the arrest of a fellow taxi driver whose other speciality appears to be robbing his passengers of their mobile phones.
Kwadwo Boateng, 24, was arrested on Monday, March 12 by the Kaneshie Police for allegedly stealing the mobile phone of Joyce Obeng, a passenger.
The Crime Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Joseph Amoah, said that Joyce took the taxi from Swan Lake, at North Kaneshie, to go to Kwame Nkrumah Circle but on reaching a point the driver asked her to alight because he could no longer go to the Circle.
He said while Ms. Obeng struggled to open the door, a man sitting by her, suspected to be Boateng’s accomplice, slipped his hand into her bag and stole her phone on the pretext of helping her to open the door, by leaning over her.
However, the driver of another taxi which had been behind the offending taxi apparently noticed the trick being used by the occupants and therefore noted its registration number.
He therefore approached Joyce who told him that she had been robbed by occupants of the taxi.
Mr. Amoah said with the help of the Good Samaritan taxi driver, Joyce reported the case to the Kaneshie Police who circulated wireless messages to other stations to help arrest the taxi.
Fortunately, on Monday, March 12, the victim spotted the taxi and informed the police and Boateng was arrested.
Another woman, Naomi Ntaadu, 32 said at the police station that she was also robbed by the same driver, using the same trick of abandoning a journey half-way and a door that would not open easily.
In that case, too, there was another man in the taxi who on the pretext of helping to open the door stole her phone.
Mr. Amoah said further investigations are being conducted and appealed to people who have had similar experiences to report to the Kaneshie Police station to identify the driver.
