The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has announced that Cabinet has given approval for the reintroduction of road and bridge tolls as part of efforts to improve the country’s road maintenance regime.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series held at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, July 30, the Minister indicated that the focus will be on deploying modern toll collection systems to enhance efficiency and reduce leakages.
Mr Agbodza noted that the new toll framework will address past inefficiencies and eliminate the manual toll collection methods that were often fraught with corruption and delays.
“Cabinet has approved the reintroduction of road and bridge tolls, but this time with a modern approach. We are looking at technology-driven collection systems that will be seamless and transparent,” he said.
The Minister explained that the decision forms part of broader reforms to ensure adequate and sustainable funding for road maintenance across the country.
He added that toll revenues will be ring-fenced to support regular upkeep of key road infrastructure.
He also assured Ghanaians that the reintroduced toll system will be implemented in a manner that minimises inconvenience to commuters.
“We are committed to doing this right. It is not just about bringing back tolls, but about building a credible system that guarantees value for every cedi paid,” he added.
