President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to African reparations and justice, while addressing Zambia’s National Assembly in his capacity as the African Union Champion for Reparations.

He called for reparative action to redress historical injustices and promote dignity across the continent.

He highlighted that Ghana will soon sponsor a United Nations resolution on slavery and expressed hope that Zambia would join as a co-sponsor.

According to him, addressing historical injustices is both a moral imperative and a catalyst for Africa’s progress.

“The African Union’s 2025 theme—Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations—is a forward-looking call to action,” President Mahama said.

He emphasised that reparations should be part of a broader strategy to strengthen African economies, institutions, and social development. The initiative, he argued, should complement regional cooperation and development plans.

President Mahama urged African nations to unite behind reparations, governance, and economic sovereignty as key pillars of the continent’s rise.

“Peace, security, justice, and dignity remain indispensable foundations for sustainable development,” he stated.
