The former commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Rtd Victor Tandoh has advocated for a change in attitude by drivers and other road users in order to reduce the spate of road accidents in the country.He said drivers must be considerate to other road users, adding that it is not the severity or otherwise of punishment to traffic offenders that will nip the current spate of road accidents in the bud.ACP Tandoh was speaking to Citi Prime News on Monday on the new motor traffic act which is expected to be signed into law by President Kufour.Commenting on complaints by drivers about the severity of fines from the motor courts, the former Commander said “laws are not made in a vacuum”, and that the current law came about as a result of the rise in motor accidents.He said the law was to keep recalcitrant people from the roads, adding that any review of the law should be aimed at keeping our roads safe.He deplored perception by some commercial drivers that the law was tailored just for them, insisting that “no single group should think the law was made purposefully for them”He said the law was to check indiscipline on our meaning that private, articulator and commercial drivers all fall under the ambit of this law.Author: Nathan Gadugah
