Leaders of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) reportedly failed to attend a scheduled meeting with the National Labour Commission (NLC) on Wednesday, March 11, amid their ongoing nationwide strike.
The meeting had been convened by the commission to address the dispute and explore possible steps toward resolving the industrial action.
The NLC had earlier instructed the association to suspend the strike and appear before the commission to discuss the concerns that triggered the protest.
However, the absence of the association’s leadership meant the commission could not proceed with deliberations on the issues raised by the striking workers.
The commission has therefore postponed the discussions and arranged another meeting for Wednesday, March 18, in the hope that the association will appear and engage in dialogue aimed at resolving the standoff.
Officials say the strike must first be suspended before the commission can fully address the substantive matters in dispute.
Speaking to TV3 Ghana on Wednesday, March 11, the Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission, Bernice Welbeck, explained that the meeting could not go ahead due to the absence of the association and the continuation of the strike.
“Because they didn’t appear and they are still on strike, you know, when a party is on strike or has instituted an industrial action, the substantive matter cannot be heard,” she said.
Dr Welbeck added that the commission has already ruled that the strike action is illegal and has directed the association to immediately call off the industrial action and appear before the commission at the next scheduled meeting.
“The first one said it constituted an illegality if they embarked on it. Now the declaration has been made that the action they’ve taken is illegal. And so we are moving step by step. They’ve been asked to call it off immediately and appear next week, Wednesday, March 18, 2026,” she stated.
