The Coalition of Muslim Organisations, Ghana, (COMOG) is entreating Muslims in the country to use the fasting period the month of Ramadan to renew their dedication to the tenets of Islam.
Islam enjoins every adult Muslim to fast from dawn to dusk for the entire month of Ramadan, the ninth month on the Islamic calendar.
A statement issued in Accra by COMOG and signed by its General Secretary, Abdel-Manan Abdel-Rahman, said, "Fasting is an opportunity to develop qualities of endurance and self-restraint, to control anger and foul language.
"The main purpose of fasting as described in the Quran "so that you may attain Taqwa or God-consciousness." Fasting is an instrument for bringing us closer to our natural state for cleansing from the dross of any disobedience.
"On this occasion of Ramadan fasting, the Coalition of Muslim Organizations, Ghana (COMOG) is urging all Muslims to use the occasion to renew their commitment to their creator and pray for peace in Ghana and the World as a whole.
"COMOG wishes to seize this opportunity of this holy month to call on Muslims and non-Muslims to respect individual religious right and freedom, and eschew inflammatory language especially on sensitive national issues that could disturb the peace we are currently enjoying as a nation.
"COMOG is wishing victims of June 3, 2015 fire and flood disaster on admission a speedy recovery and extends its condolence to the bereaved families of the departed ones.
"COMOG is calling on the Government to take pragmatic measures to prevent a recurrence of this kind of disaster in future by considering construction of huge underground drainage systems.
"Finally, COMOG wishes to advise Muslims to make lessons and character that will be acquired during Ramadan reflect in their everyday lives as stated in the Qur'an, Muslims are commanded to fast so that they may "learn self-restraint" (Qur'an 2:183).
"May Allah accept our fasting, forgive our sins, and bring peace to Ghana and the World as a whole."
