Former National Sports Council Chairman, Dr. Emmanuel Owusu Ansah, has attributed Ghana’s ineffective showing in the sporting sector down to the constant change in Sports Directors and Ministers.
Speaking as the main speaker at Thursday evening's Joy Sports Leadership Dialogue, Dr. Ansah touched on the phenomenon of changing too many directors of sport in the country and how it affects its development.
“From 1960 to 2015, Ghana has had 24 directors of sports. Out of the 24, only five of them were in office for a little over five years,” he said at the event, held at the Best Western Premier Hotel.
“This means that 19 other directors had an average of one year and two months in office.”
“One director, the late Joe Lartey, stayed in office for three days and was removed. His position was announed on a Friday. On Monday, another announcement came and he was off.”
“The picture of the tenure of office of Ministers of Youth and Sports is even worse. For a period of six years from 2009 to 2015, the sports ministry has seen seven Ministers of Sports.”
Dr. Ansah is of the view the constant chopping and changing will affect the implementation of any policies generated by the directors and ministers.
