An Accra Fast-Track High Court has been asked to compel the Electoral Commission to register all prisoners in the country to vote in the December elections. The Legal Resources Centre which filed the writ on Friday says the failure of the EC to facilitate the process for prisoners to vote amounted to a violation of their fundamental human rights.Ghanaian prisoners have not voted in any elections since 1992.Speaking to Joy News, the Head of the Centre, Mr. Edward Amuzu said the writ followed a letter sent to the EC asking it to register prisoners for purposes of voting. He said the EC replied to the letter saying it was unable to do so citing PNDC Law 248 which says that people who are in prisons or in mental institutions cannot register and vote. The EC also cited logistical, administrative and security concerns for its inability to register the prisoners. But Mr. Amuzu says their arguments of the EC are untenable since no excuse can justify the violation of the human rights of the people. The case will be heard on July 24, 2008.The EC on its part told Joy News it has not been served with the writ yet.It has however indicated it is prepared to contest the matter in court.Story by Malik Abass Daabu
