Ghana legend Anthony Yeboah’s long standing Bundesliga record for the most goals scored by an African player has been broken by Senegal’s Papiss Demba Cisse.
The Freiburg striker took his season’s tally to 22 when scoring both goals in their 2-0 win over Hamburg over the weekend in the German top-flight.
This means Cisse has eclipsed Yeboah’s tally of 20 set in the 1993/94 season during his time with Eintracht Frankfurt.
He is also eyeing the top scorer’s award in Germany which Yeboah shared with other strikers twice.
Cisse will be delighted that he has now smashed Yeboah for the most goals scored by an African.
He spoke of his delight when equaling the Ghanaian striker’s record but had to wait for three weeks before eclipsing the record.
“I didn’t know I had equalled Yeboah’s record and was only told on the evening of the match,” Cisse told the BBC last month.
“I was very happy but with five matches left, I still want to achieve more.”
Yeboah took Germany’s top flight football by storm with his breathtaking goals and paved the way for other Africans like Jay Jay Okocha to make their name.
