The Eastern Regional Security Council says it will clamp down on drinking spots that operate beyond 10pm.
Using the Akuapemhene’s celebration of Awukudae to announce their resolve, Chairman of the Council and Regional Minister Antwi-Boasiako Sekyere said, the security council was not announcing a new directive but enforcing an old bye-law.
The council has already ordered drinking spots and bars to close by 10pm daily and registered nightclubs can operate until midnight.
Antwi- Boasiako observed that bye-laws have been left unforced leading to nocturnal crime and wanton drunkenness.
But not anymore, he vowed, stating that henceforth “We will let the law take its course”.
One of the most common occasions for the abuse of the bye-laws, he noted, was festivals within the region.
Odwira and Ohum festivals are celebrated by the people of Akropong and Amanokrom between the months of September to January every year.
The Regional minister advised that the firing of muskets during these festivals must only be done by those registered to do so. The weapon must also be registered.
