Head of the Department of Political Science at the University of Ghana, Professor Alidu Seidu, has advised that the Electoral Commission be divided into two factions to enable them effectively deliver on their mandate.
According to him, the body was overburdened, which has accounted for a lot of electoral malpractices.
“When we are talking about enforcement, a lot of people believe that the Electoral Commission is overburdened in terms of the responsibility they are supposed to perform; election management duty but also regulation,” he said.
Speaking on JoyNews on Saturday, he elaborated that this would allow each faction to focus on their core mandate which is either they conduct elections or regulate and enforce EC party regulations.
“People are also advocating that moving forward the EC should be divided in future constitutional reforms so that one particular aspect of the EC will focus on election management. Then the other body derived from the EC will definitely look at regulations and enforcement of political party regulation,” he said.
Professor Seidu continued “I think that when we have a separate institution that focuses on it all the time and make sure that every political party is in good standing at any point in time, there should be another one when its time for elections they go and do the elections.”
