A Political Science Lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kwesi Amakye, has stated that it will be problematic for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to elect Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, as the flagbearer of the party for the 2012 elections. On Friday June 4, delegates from the Ashanti Region to this year's commemoration of the June 4 Uprising marked in Tamale, displayed banners which read, "Movement for Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings: 2012 President", and T-shirts with the photograph of the former first lady embossed on them.According to reports, the group has already started preparations towards a campaign for the first female president in the country. Underground campaigning and lobbying have already started for the president of the 31st December Women’s movement. The spokesperson for the group, Henry Oware, in an interview with Citi News said if everything goes according to plan, Nana Konadu will lead the NDC and subsequently become the first female president for Ghana. But in an interview with Citi News on Monday June 4, Mr Kwesi Amakye opined that Ghanaians are not ready for a female president.According to him, the NDC will have a big problem on its hands following constant criticisms of President Mills' administration from the office of the former President, who rooted for President Mills in the past.“Bringing Nana Konadu will be problematic for the NDC. One wants to look at the fact that criticisms on the President has been coming from the office of the former President, and her wife stands to benefit from that. ("The Ethnic factor will come in, President Mills comes from the Central Region and he is a Fante. Now any presidential candidate that the Central Region supports, wins elections in the fourth republic… giving the fact that the main critique of President Mills happens to be former President Rawlings, Central Region will vote against her”. He said.Mr Amakye added that due to the incessant criticisms directed at President Mills who he (Jerry Rawlings) imposed on the party, any presidential hopeful that comes from the Rawlingses, will not be taken seriously by Ghanaians.“The Swedru declaration came from former President Rawlings and it was seen as an imposition of President Mills on the party. Only today that President Mills saw the opportunity to rule, the very person who brought him, is the one who is castigating him. So if somebody comes from the Rawlingses, will Ghanaians take it as a serious offer?” he queried.Meanwhile the aide to former President Rawlings has dispelled criticisms that the Rawlingses are power drunk, adding that the former first lady is more than qualified to be Ghana's president should she express interest.Source: Citifmonline.com/Ghana
