The Ghana Society of Radiographers (GSR) has called on government to as a matter of urgency facilitate the establishment of the Ghana College of Allied Health Professionals by amending the Specialist Health Training and Plant Medicine Research Act 2011 (Act 833).

This according to the group, will provide radiographers in the country the opportunity to pursue advanced courses in radiography and other post-graduate clinical programmes.

The National President of GSR, Prince Rockson made the appeal at the National Scientific Conference of the Society and the 1st congress under the theme “Evolution of medical imaging and radiation therapy practice, advent of artificial intelligence and the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Prince Rockson noted that there is a need for policymakers to pay attention to a team-centric holistic approach instead of a doctor-centric approach, adding that "us radiographers are the back bone of the medical profession due to our roles in the medical field."

Mr Prince Rockson, however, appealed for capacity building and skills development training on medical imaging to enable radiographers to deliver quality healthcare for Ghanaians especially as the Covid-19 pandemic continue to ravage the country’s healthcare systems.

"I am appealing for a capacity building and skills development training on medical imaging for our radiographers to help  them deliver effectively especially in this era of covid pandemic." he said

On his part, the Dean and Associate Professor (medical imaging) at the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Prof Eric Kwasi Ofori called for a paradigm shift in the practice of medical imaging in Ghana.

He said it is important for radiographers to upgrade their knowledge and skills  in order to effectively and efficiently deliver on their profession

"I urge you, our hardworking radiographers to improve and update on your knowledge especially technological advancements in medical imaging and advent of artificial intelligence," Prof Eric Kwasi Ofori said.
