Abdulai Tetteh, a 54-year-old farmer, has been remanded in prison custody by the Asamankese Circuit Court charged with being in possession of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
His plea was not taken and he will re-appear on November 4.
The Prosecution told the court presided over by Mr Kofi Akrowiah that the Asamankese Police on May 28 had information that a taxi cab with registration number ER 3381 X travelling from Suhum to Asamankese was transporting dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
The Police subsequently spotted the taxi cab and signalled it to stop but the driver ignored it and sped on.
It was however chased by the police and when the driver realized that they were closing in on him, he abandoned the car and fled with some of the passengers on board.
Tetteh was however not lucky and was caught by the police and later when the abandoned car was searched, a fertilizer sack full of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp was found concealed in it.
Tetteh, the Prosecution said, claimed ownership of the sack and told the police he bought the stuff at Boti falls near Koforidua.
He was arrested and escorted to the police station together with the exhibit and the taxi cab.
The prosecution said the exhibit had been sent to the police forensic laboratory for analysis and report.
