Two more persons have been found dead as a result of the ferocious fire that swept through parts of Adum and Asafo in the Kumasi Metropolis last Friday, increasing the number of people who perished to three. The bodies, which had been burnt beyond recognition, were those of two males retrieved from the Subin Valley around the Railway area on Saturday morning by residents who could no longer stand the stench from the valley. This brings to three the number of bodies so far retrieved after the tragic accident in which a fully loaded petrol tanker somersaulted and caught fire. A source told Daily Guide that both deceased persons, who could not be identified, seemed to be in their late 20’s. The valley has been turned into a ‘free range toilet’ facility and it is believed that the deceased were defecating at dawn when they were caught in the fire. The bodies of the deceased persons had bloated and were near decomposition when they were retrieved from the valley. The charred remains were sent to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) morgue for autopsy, the source added. The source feared that more bodies might be trapped in the deep valley, which remains clouded in dark smoke, thus preventing the residents from searching for more bodies. It would be recalled that an inferno swept through parts of Kumasi on the dawn of Friday when a petrol tanker crashed and somersaulted at the Akyempimhene Palace’s portion of the Osei Tutu I Avenue at Adum. The Northern Region-bound truck with registration number GT 7560 X ran over a pavement just around the Justmoh Conference Centre at Adum near the Railway Station and fell on its side, causing spillage of petrol. Reports have it that the spillage, running through gutters, went as far as to Asafo, a journey of about one mile, where it caught fire near a place fish mongers were smoking fish. The wild fire, sources indicated, swept through most parts of the city where the petrol had spilled, causing damage to whatever it came into contact with, until it eventually exploded when it reached the petrol tanker which was lying motionless. The driver, his mate and another person on board the truck were however rescued and rushed to KATH for treatment before the blast. But a young man in his late 20’s who was purportedly defecating in the Subin Valley was unable to escape and was caught in the blazing fire which burnt him to death. Source: Daily Guide
