More than a decade ago, tragedy struck Accra when a multi-storey shopping center in Achimota collapsed, killing nine people and injuring dozens. The disaster was attributed to faulty construction and the absence of a safety permit. Then-President John Dramani Mahama suspended his re-election campaign and vowed to hold those responsible accountable, calling the negligence “unforgivable.”
Fast forward to 2024, the narrative surrounding Melcom has dramatically shifted. The company, once associated with one of Ghana’s most harrowing construction failures, now stands as a beacon of sustainability and innovation. This week, the Melcom Group of Companies received the prestigious EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) Green Building Certification from the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
Speaking at the award ceremony, Francis Sam, Group General Manager of Melcom Group, reflected on the company’s journey.
“We cannot erase the past, but we can learn from it and build a better future. Today’s recognition is a testament to our resolve to do better—not just for ourselves, but for the communities we serve,” he said.
The EDGE certification follows years of introspection and investment in safe, innovative, and environmentally conscious infrastructure. Melcom has also established itself as a leader in advocating for green construction across Ghana, helping to elevate industry standards.
Kyle Kelhofer, IFC Senior Country Manager for West Africa, praised Melcom’s transformation. “Their commitment to sustainability is not just a corporate initiative—it’s a model for resilience and innovation. Green buildings are safer, more efficient, and essential for sustainable development,” he said.
From rebuilding trust to implementing cutting-edge technologies and resource-efficient designs, Melcom has redefined its legacy.
Today, the company’s tagline, “Where Ghana Shops,” resonates not only as a promise of quality goods but also as a commitment to sustainability, safety, and community development.
As Ghana’s construction sector grows, Melcom’s journey serves as both a cautionary story and an inspirational blueprint.
