Armed police and military officers have launched a manhunt for the masterminds of Wednesday’s attacks on Fulani herdsmen in Gushiegu in the Northern Region. Thirteen people, including two children were killed and several others injured. The nomads are alleged to have been attacked by some Konkombas. Interior Minister Dr. Benjamin Kumbour told Joy News investigations have begun into the incident. He said the security officers were following some leads and expressed optimism that the perpetrators of the heinous crime would be found and punished. Dr. Kumbour says security officers have been deployed to the area to maintain calm. Joy FM's Northern Regional Correspondent, Mahama Shaibu reported that some Fulanis in the Gushiegu area are seeking shelter in the premises of the Gushiegu District Assembly. 150 others are seeking shelter at the Gushiegu Police Station. The Gushiegu District Chief Executive Alhaji Fuseini Alhassan, in an interview with Joy FM's Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, said the assembly was providing the about 500 asylum seekers with food, water, and other essentials. He said the assembly would ask for help from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) if need be. The Northern Regional Police Commander, ACP George Tuffuor, said the 13 bodies were retrieved from scattered huts in the area. Some of the huts, he said, were burnt by the attackers. According to him, all the 13 bodies have been deposited at the Gushiegu government hospital morgue while the 11 injured are receiving treatment at the hospital. Hospital authorities say three of the 11 have been transferred to the Tamale Government Hospital. Deputy Interior Minister Kobby Acheampong expressed concern at the increasing alienation of the Fulanis in the Ghanaian society. He said the situation was dangerous for the cohesion of the country and has to stop. Mr Acheampong said if people commit criminal offenses, they should be dealt with in accordance with the law and their backgrounds should not be a factor in dealing with them.
