The federation of Universities’ Senior Staff Associations of Ghana (FUSSAG) on Thursday 15th July, opened its 2010 national delegates' congress at the KNUST Great hall. This year’s congress under the theme ‘strengthening the structure of FUSSAG: Enhancing Senior Staff Capabilities , is a historic one as it marks FUSSAG’s final transitional stage in its evolution into a labour union, recognized by law for collective bargaining purposes. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the three-day congress, Prof. W.O. Ellis, Pro-vice chancellor, urged members of FUSSAG to carefully study the scheme of service in order to be abreast with the various rules and responsibilities to enhance efficiency. He also called on them to promote internal democracy to enrich decision making. He said the time has come for FUSSAG which is only limited to the public universities to extend its tentacles to the private universities. For his part, Mr. Akuoku Kyei-Baffour, federal president of FUSSAG said the purpose of the meeting was for stock-taking. He also said FUSSAG is a worker group for over 3400 middle level staff in the public universities in Ghana, adding that FUSSAG membership constituted 25% of the total manpower strength of the Universities. Togbe Adom Drayi II, head of the organization department of the Trade Union Congress, who represented the secretary General of Ghana TUC also welcomed FUSSAG into their fold and shared some achievements of the Ghana TUC in recent times with them.
