The Gbi Traditional Council in the Hohoe Municipality in the Volta Region has announced the death of their Paramount Chief, Togbega Gabusu VI.
He died at the age of 68, bringing to an end his 29-year reign as overlord of the Gbi state.
A seven-day state of mourning has been declared, where all residents in Hohoe are to dress in red or black attire during the period to show their bereavement.
All flags are also to fly at half-mast, while a book of condolence has been opened for him at premises of the Hohoe Traditional Council.
Divisional Chief of Gbi Wegbe, Togbe Keh XII, announced the death of the adored Paramount Chief at a press conference in Hohoe.
“Togbega Gabusu VI took ill a few months ago. He had quality medical treatment and attention both home and abroad but to no avail, the time has come now for the Gbis to officially inform all and sundry that His Royal Highness Togbega Gabusu VI has gone to the village to join his ancestors”, he said.
He stated that funeral arrangements would be announced in due course, adding that the Divisional Chief of Gbi-Kpeme, Togbe Wode VI, would assume the position of acting President of the Gbi Traditional Council until a new Paramount Chief is installed.
Togbega Gabusu VI who was enstooled on May 25, 1989, was known in private life as Billy Bright Eli Komla Kumadie.
He hailed from the Royal Kadrake Gate of Hohoe-Torkoni clan and was a teacher by profession.
He served as the Vice and President of the Volta Region House of Chiefs, where he would be remembered for the proposed use of Togbega title for Paramount Chiefs, to distinguish them from divisional chiefs.
Togbega Gabusu VI was also a one-time member of the National House of Chiefs.
