The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) has announced the appointment of Prof. Francis Hasford as its new Deputy Director General, effective Monday, June 16, 2025.
His appointment follows the retirement of Prof. Dickson Adomako, who served the Commission for 23 years and retired upon reaching the compulsory retirement age of 60.
Prof. Hasford is a seasoned Medical Physicist with 17 years of experience. He has held several leadership roles within GAEC, Ghana, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Before this appointment, he served as Head of the Department of Medical Physics at the Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences (SNAS), University of Ghana, and Director of the Radiological and Medical Sciences Research Institute (RAMSRI) at GAEC.
Internationally, Prof. Hasford is President of the Federation of African Medical Physics Organisations (FAMPO), a member of the Executive Committee of the International Organisation for Medical Physics (IOMP), and a Project Counterpart to the IAEA.
He also serves as an Executive Member of the Ghana Young Academy and as Vice President of the Ghana Society for Medical Physics.
Prof. Hasford brings extensive expertise in nuclear science and technology to his new role. At RAMSRI, he led initiatives including GAEC’s flagship annual cancer awareness and free screening programme.
His involvement in national and international committees on policy, research, training, and mentorship aligns with GAEC’s mission to promote the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology for Ghana’s socioeconomic development.
Introducing him at GAEC’s mid-year durbar, Director General Prof. Samuel Boakye Dampare expressed confidence in the appointment.
“Prof. Hasford is well endowed with visionary leadership and deep technical knowledge in nuclear science and the workings of GAEC.
"He will be an invaluable addition to the team as we advance our strategic objectives of using nuclear science to better the lives of Ghanaians,” he said.
In his acceptance remarks, Prof. Hasford said: “It is an honour to serve at this pivotal time in GAEC’s history. I look forward to discharging my responsibilities in collaboration with all stakeholders and harnessing nuclear technology for sustainable development.”
GAEC remains committed to promoting the peaceful application of nuclear science and related technologies to support national development.
