The Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), Dr. Robert Floyd is set to visit Ghana from June 2 to June 5 as part of a strategic tour through selected West African countries.
This visit is to strengthen international cooperation on nuclear non-proliferation and to advance the global mission of achieving a comprehensive ban on nuclear test.
Dr. Floyd's itinerary includes courtesy visits to key government agencies such as the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration (MoFARI).
These engagements are expected to reinforce Ghana's commitment to nuclear non-proliferation and to facilitate discussions on how the country can further contribute to global security efforts.
According to the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, “visit will enable the National Nuclear Research Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission to collaborate more effectively with stakeholders for the occurrences of natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis for emergency preparations and response.”
The highlight of the visit will be a public lecture delivered by Dr. Floyd on June 4, 2024, at the Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences (SNAS) of the University of Ghana. The lecture, aimed at stakeholders including policymakers, academics, security services, and the general public, will focus on the CTBTO's mission and the importance of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) in ensuring global security.
Established to prevent nuclear explosions worldwide, the CTBTO plays a critical role in monitoring and enforcing compliance with the CTBT.
Ghana, a signatory of the CTBT since 1996, has established a CTBT National Data Centre (NDC) at the GAEC to support international monitoring efforts and to enhance its capacity to detect and respond to nuclear test explosions.
Dr. Floyd's visit underscores the ongoing commitment of both Ghana and the CTBTO to global peace and security through the elimination of nuclear tests.
