Ghana Water Limited (GWL) currently produces about 219 million gallons of water a day, leaving a daily supply deficit of 131 million gallons, its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Adam Mutawakilu, has disclosed.

He said the company’s production level remained significantly below the country’s estimated daily demand of 350 million gallons.

Mr Mutawakilu disclosed this on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Wednesday, September 2, during a discussion on the topic, “Is Ghana’s water quality and access under threat?”

“Currently, we produce about 219 million gallons a day. The demand is 350 million gallons a day,” he said.

The figures mean GWCL produces about 62.6 per cent of the country’s daily water requirement, creating a shortfall of approximately 37.4 per cent.

The supply challenge is further compounded by non-revenue water, including water lost through ageing and damaged pipelines as well as illegal connections.

Mr Mutawakilu said the company’s non-revenue water rate stood at 47.6 per cent as of June 2026, although it had declined from 52.2 per cent in December 2024 and 51.6 per cent in December 2025.

He said GWCL was replacing ageing pipelines and intensifying efforts to tackle illegal connections as part of measures to improve water supply and revenue collection.
