Ghana’s Ambassador in Egypt, Alhaji Amidu Sulemana says Ghanaians in the troubled country are not in any immediate danger that demands their evacuation. A Ghanaian lady is reported to have sustained injuries from burning by demonstrators demanding President Hosni Mubarack's resignation.
The lady is reported to have sustained the burns when a petrol bomb was thrown into the house of an Egyptian family she was working for. She is currently recieving treatment at the hospital.
Many countries including the USA and Turkey have already begun evacuating their citizens but the Government of Ghana has said Ghanaians would not be evacuated now since they are not under any threat.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Alhaji Sulemana explained that Ghanaians are not the target of the angry Egyptians who are still protesting amid clashes to ensure the exit of President Hosni Mubarak after 30-years of rule.
According to him, the Ghanaian Embassy, in collaboration with leaders of the Ghanaian community in Egypt, is contacting all Ghanaians in the troubled country to be appropriately informed about their situation and provide the necessary help.
He indicated that there are plans to be executed once things escalate but for now the embassy would stick to the prevailing arrangement while advising the government accordingly.
He urged all Ghanaians to contact the mission using the following lines should they hear of any resident in Egypt who needs help – 002/015 1222 0542[Monica], 011 621 7024 [Mavis], 016 020 2054[Frimpong], and 010 123 2361[Masud].
On his part, Leader of the Ghanaian Community in Egypt, whose name was given as Masud, corroborated the ambassador’s claims, saying the situation is being monitored and that no one has been attacked yet except the isolated case of the lady who got burned.
He again urged those who are in danger to contact the community for help because plans have been put in place to deal with their problems.
“Once they begin to attack anybody, we will execute the plan,” he said adding, “The threat is not there yet.”
Meanwhile, a Ghanain Economist with the African Import and Export Bank in Egypt, Dr Francis Mbro, has told Dwa So Nsem host Adakabre Frimpong-Manso that the situation in the country is awkward and that it is not safe in the streets.
He said the risk level there does not allow one to live a normal life there, for which reason he has sent his family back to Ghana.
